Free Summer Concert Series in Philadelphia's Western Suburbs

Nothing says summer in the Philadelphia suburbs like a lawn chair, a cooler, and a free show under the stars. This year, towns across Chester and Montgomery County are rolling out great lineups of outdoor concert series. Most of them completely free, family-friendly, and walkable from a great dinner spot. Here's your guide to where to catch live music this summer without spending a dime on tickets.

West Chester: First Fridays and Concerts in the Park

Downtown West Chester turns its streets into a stage on the First Friday of June, July, and August, with bands performing at multiple locations from 5:30–7:30pm and free on-street parking after 5pm. This is perfect for a stroll between sets and a stop at a nearby restaurant or bar. The borough also hosts its long-running Concerts in the Park series, with shows at Hoopes Park, John O. Green Park, and Everhart Park throughout the season. Bring a blanket, grab dinner from one of the food trucks that often show up, and settle in for the evening.

Malvern and the Wider Chester County Circuit

the Grove shopping/restaurant area hosts free music every Wednesday & Saturday nights during the summer. They have a great family friendly outdoor viewing area between Sly Fox and Bomba Taco. 

The Chester County Concert Band performs a free outdoor show at Malvern Memorial Park each summer, and the West Whiteland Concert Series (serving the Exton/Downingtown corridor) brings in touring tribute and cover bands for several Thursday evening shows. Further out, Rhythm and Brews at New Garden Park rounds out the season with a full slate of free concerts paired with local beer vendors.

Phoenixville: First Fridays & Kimberton Park Summer Concert Series

Just like West Chester, Phoenixville closes it's streets on first Fridays each month and there are plenty of music performers to hear.

Also, three free concerts light up the Miller Amphitheater at Kimberton Park this summer. No tickets are required. Food trucks rotate in for each show (Fitzwater Station, Philly Hots, and Bucktown Grille among them), and organizers ask guests to bring a canned food donation for PACS in exchange for an East Pikeland sticker. It's a low-key, community-first way to spend a summer evening in one of the prettiest parks in the area.

Downingtown: Live and Local

Downingtown's "Live and Local" concert series brings regional bands to town on select Saturday evenings throughout the summer at 6:30pm. It's a favorite for families who want to combine an evening out with dinner downtown. 

Conshohocken: Thursday Nights in the Park

Conshohocken's Summer Concert Series runs seven free Thursday evening shows from 7–8:30pm, kicking off in July. The first stretch of concerts takes place at Sutcliffe Park, before the series moves to Mary Wood Park for its final shows, including a dedicated children's concert. Bring lawn chairs and blankets because the grassy areas fill up fast on nice nights.

King of Prussia: Concerts Under the Stars and Live Music on the Green

King of Prussia offers two great free (and semi-free) options this summer. Concerts Under the Stars at the Upper Merion Township Building Park has been a Main Line tradition for decades, mixing free community shows with a handful of ticketed headliner nights. Meanwhile, King of Prussia Town Center hosts Live Music on the Green every Thursday from April through October.  No ticket, no cover, just live music on the green space between the shops.

Tips for a Great Night Out

Most of these series recommend arriving early to grab a good spot on the lawn. You might want to bring a blanket or low-back chairs, since many venues don't allow tall seating close to the stage. Check each town's website or social media in the days before a show, since start times and lineups occasionally shift. And since many of these concerts sit within a short walk or drive of some of the best restaurants and bars in the western suburbs, they're a great excuse to turn a Thursday into a full night out.
